It depends on how standard your production is: if an established ERP's model of orders, inventory and production already matches your shop, implement and customise it; if your estimating, routing or job tracking is what makes you competitive, build custom software around it and integrate the accounting you keep. Many manufacturers end up with both, an ERP for inventory and the books and custom software for quoting and the shop floor. The decision should come out of a paid discovery, not a sales demo.
Two Routes, Decided in Discovery
AltaPro AI's ERP work has two routes and states both up front: a custom operational system built around your workflows, or an established ERP, Odoo or ERPNext, implemented and customised when its model already fits. Which one is right is a finding, not a starting assumption.
Discovery is paid and produces something you keep: your requirements, data, integrations and phases written down. If you take that document to someone else, it still has value.
Where an Established ERP Fits Well
If you buy, make and ship in a way the ERP already models (standard bills of materials, stock items, purchase orders, work orders, shipments), an implementation is faster than a build and brings years of other companies' edge cases with it.
The test is whether your people would use the standard screens as they are. Every customisation adds cost now and upgrade work later, so an ERP that needs heavy changes to fit you is a warning sign.
Where Custom Software Pays
Winnipeg's manufacturers range from fabrication and machine shops to food processors, and many compete on something an ERP does not model well:
- Estimating from drawings, materials and machine time, the way your estimators actually price
- Job travellers and routing for one-off or engineer-to-order work
- Drawing revisions and quality records tied to each job
- Customer-specific pricing and paperwork the generic screens cannot hold
Integration Over Replacement
On either route, accounting and payroll stay on the tools you trust and are fed by the operational system. A custom quoting tool can hand accepted jobs to an ERP; an ERP can feed a custom shop-floor app. The aim is one record of each order, entered once.
Tax rules go in at the start too. The Canada Revenue Agency's rate table lists Manitoba at 5% GST plus 7% retail sales tax, and invoices to customers in other provinces carry different combinations, so tax is set per line and per customer location.
Run It After Launch
An ERP or custom system needs hosting, monitoring, backups, security updates and support for as long as you run it. AltaPro AI delivers this in four separately paid parts: paid discovery, a phased implementation, a monthly managed service with a defined support allowance, and enhancements scoped separately. There are no published prices; scope sets the number.
We come to you. AltaPro AI is based in Edmonton and comes on site for discovery and go-live, wherever your business is. Between visits, the work runs over video, phone and screen-share. Manitoba is one hour ahead of Alberta. The ERP route is at /erp-implementation, the manufacturing scope at /manufacturing-software, the Winnipeg page at /ai-automation-winnipeg, and the Western Canada overview at /western-canada.
